Men's Swimming Defeats Cortland

ITHACA, N.Y. - The men's swimming and diving team (2-0) opened its home schedule with a 125-118 win over Cortland. The Bombers trailed by two points headed into the final event, but the team consisting of senior Matt Olko (Rye/Harrison), junior Mike Ariel (Xavarian Brothers/Norwood, Mass.), and freshmen Steve Croucher (Dallastown Area/York, Pa. ) and Joe Gage (Edwin Oscar Smith/Storrs, Conn.) took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay to give the Bombers the victory.

The Bombers also took wins in four other events. Gage earned victories in the 100- (48.78) and 200-yard freestyle events (1:45.83). Olko picked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight week, touching the wall with a time of 23.02. Sophomore Matt Carolan (Northampton Area/Walnutport, Pa.) finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.78).

Senior captain Scott Wilson (Springville-Griffith Institute/Springville) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.93) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.94). Ariel finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.56).

Freshman Mike Glicini (Dallas/Dallas, Pa.) finished second in both diving events, scoring 240.00 points in the 1-meter event and 232.30 points in the 3-meter event. Sophomore Andrew Longcore (Red Hook/Red Hook) was third in both diving events.

The Bombers defeated Cortland for the first time since 2004. Ithaca is off to the team's first 2-0 start since 2003. Ithaca finished the 2003-04 season 15-0 and won the state title.

Ithaca travels to Division II Bloomsburg Saturday at 1 p.m.
